Mammoth Pool Recreation Area

 Along the west section of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway the road takes you into the “Heart of the Sierra”, with views of the Sierra peaks all the way up to the base of the wilderness. One of many destination points is Mammoth Pool, a man-made reservoir on the San Joaquin River that is 5 miles long. This area offers some of Sierra National Forest’s most unique and splendid beauty with recreational activities that include camping, picnicking, hiking, and fishing. At Mammoth Pool recreational activities also include boating, water-skiing, personal watercraft riding and non-motorized boating.

Yosemite South Recreation Area

 South of Yosemite National Park, the Highway 41 corridor north of Oakhurst and Sky Ranch road offer a variety of recreational activities including many campgrounds, picnicking, hiking, bicycling, horseback riding, OHV and motorcycle trails, a Giant Sequoia Grove, a historic logging railroad and the east part of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. Sky Ranch road is the eastern part of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway (insert hyperlink), taking you up into some of the most remote and beautiful areas in the Sierra National Forest. Although parts of the road remain unpaved and traveling is slow, the peaceful rustic campgrounds, Giant Sequoia Grove, views of Fresno Dome and rushing creeks make it well worth the drive.

Nelder Grove Interpretive Picnic Area

Near Nelder Grove campground, Nelder Grove Interpretive Picnic Area offers 2 site picnic sites and several historical replicas and displays. With life-size replicas of cross-log and two-pole logging chutes along the original paths loggers used 100 years ago, two restored cabins form the center of the site. Also interspersed among the area are several giant sequoia tree stumps left by the loggers. Within a nice, short walk of the large cabin is the "Big Ed" giant sequoia.

Take Hwy 41 north from Fresno; continue thru Oakhurst to Sky Ranch Road (6S10), which is also Forest Road 10, travel 6.6 miles turn left on 6S47Y, go 1.2 miles to the fork in the road, continue right on 6S90 for 3/10 of a mile, turn left at Nelder Grove campground sign, travel 2/10 of a mile to interpretive area.

San Joaquin River Recreation Area

The San Joaquin River Recreational Area is nestled in a valley of chaparral, pine and oak trees along the San Joaquin River in between Kerckhoff Reservoir and Redinger Lake. Recreational activities include camping, swimming, hiking, and viewing wildlife. Boating, personal water crafting and non-motorized boating are permitted at Reddinger Lake. 

Just a few miles north of Reddinger Lake on Road 225 is the Exact Geographic Center of California.

Merced River Recreation Area

 The Merced River is designated a Wild and Scenic River and is a popular recreation area along Highway 140. The main fork flows through steep river canyons from Yosemite National Park into Sierra National Forest. The South Fork flows from high in the Sierras, through Wawona, down into Hites Cove. This area is known for its spectacular early spring wildflower displays. Activities include camping, swimming, whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, and picnicking.

Temporary bridges along the Ferguson rock slide on Hwy 140 limit vehicle length to 28 feet. No overnight camping or fires except in designated areas.
