BIG CREEK CAMPGROUND

Overview

Big Creek Campground lies in the expansive Flathead National Forest in northwestern Montana. Visitors can enjoy access to the Flathead River as well as the countless other recreational opportunities provided by the surrounding forests.

Recreation

Visitors enjoy the ample fishing and floating opportunities provided by the river. Trout are a popular catch amid the calm flow of the water. Boating is also an excellent pastime, as the river is perfect for floating, rafting and canoeing.

Across from the campground is the Glacier Institute’s Big Creek Outdoor Education Center, which provides learning opportunities for visitors of all ages. Programs offered include seminars and guided hikes, which point out the diverse natural and cultural resources of the Glacier National Park and the Crown of the Continent Ecosystem.

Facilities

The campground offers several accessible individual campsites for tent and RV camping. Each has convenient access to the river and is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills.

A group camping area is nestled in the middle of the campground and can accommodate up to 200 guests. Campfire circles and group picnic areas are also available.

Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. The water is in 2 locations and are hand pumps. They are not for filling your RV so please come with your water full.

The campground sits along the North Fork of the Flathead River, which begins in Canada and joins a couple other forks before depositing into Flathead Lake. It is a forested area of mature pine and fir trees that provide a sparse understory at an elevation of 3,300 feet.

Big Creek Campground is just a few miles from the Camas Creek entrance to the Glacier National Park. Columbia Falls, along the North Fork of the Flathead River, is located 19 miles south of the campground.

From Columbia Falls, Montana, follow State Route 486 north for approximately 20 miles to the campground entrance on the right. The road is pavement for 10 miles and gravel for approximately 9 miles. An alternate route through Glacier National Park would be to enter the park through West Glacier. Take Glacier Route1 Rd/Going to the Sun Rd for 2 miles. Turn left onto Camas Rd for 11 miles. Turn left onto North Fork Rd for 2.7 miles of gravel. Campground will be on your left.

EMERY BAY CAMPGROUND

Overview

Emery Bay Campground is located high in the Rocky Mountains, less than 30 miles from the Continental Divide, surrounded by towering mountain peaks.

Visitors can expect a variety of recreational activities, including fishing, boating, swimming, hiking, exploring and big game hunting.

Recreation

Boating is popular on the 27,750-acre reservoir, and a native boat ramp for smaller watercraft is available. Swimming and fishing are also popular pastimes, and anglers can expect a catch of cutthroat trout and other varieties.

Facilities

The campground offers 26 campsites, including some first come, first serve, available for tent and RV camping. Two group campsites are also available and can accommodate up to 75 guests on each separate loop.

Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Vault toilets are provided. Also drinking water is provided after June 15th. Water is not a fill station so please come with your RV water full. An on-site host is available to answer any questions about the campground and surrounding areas.

Natural Features

The campground is situated along the massive Hungry Horse Reservoir, which was dammed to provide hydroelectric power and flood control to the area. It is the 10th highest dam in the United States and provides a stunning backdrop.

Emery Bay Campground is just 15 miles southwest of the West Glacier entrance into Glacier National Park.

SWAN LAKE CAMPGROUND

Overview

This recreation area is located near the village of Swan Lake at the north end of the scenic Swan Valley in northwest Montana.
The campground consists of two loops. Ponderosa Loop offers open, large sites with plenty of space, while sites at Birch Loop are shaded and more clustered together. There is also a reservable group site which accomodates up to 100 people.

Recreation

Campers and day-use visitors have access to a boat ramp and a beach. Both power and non-motorized boating is permitted.
This campground also offers Kayak, Paddleboard and Canoe rentals.
Anglers can fish for several kinds of trout as well as Kokanee salmon and Northern Pike. Bike lanes wind throughout the campground.

Facilities

The campground has 38 family-sized campsites and large group site with paved parking areas, fire rings and picnic tables. Drinking water and vault toilets are available. There is no dump station at this campground but there is a fill station as you enter the park on the right just passed the Pay Kiosk.

Some sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.

LID CREEK CAMPGROUND

Overview

Lid Creek Campground lies in the heart of the Rocky Mountains, west of the Continental Divide and just south of the Canadian border.

Spectacular views and ample opportunities for recreation surround the campground, keeping visitors coming back to the area again and again.

Recreation

Visitors to the area enjoy a variety of biking and hiking trails that begin near the campground and wind around the reservoir.

Boating, swimming and fishing are excellent pastimes on the 27,750-acre Hungry Horse Reservoir. Anglers can expect a catch of cutthroat trout and other varieties.

Facilities

The campground offers 23 campsites, several of which are first-come, fist-served sites for tent and RV camping. Each site is equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills.

Vault toilets are provided, but drinking water is not available at the campground. Though it is not a fill station, Drinking water can be found at the Lost Johnny Point Campground for your water jugs and is located about 5 miles north of Lid Creek.

Lid Creek Campground is located 15 miles south of Hungry Horse, Montana, on the West Side Reservoir Road 895. To find the West Side Reservoir Road, turn off of Highway 2 just past milepost 144. Take the paved West Side Reservoir Road across the Hungry Horse Dam and continue for another 11 miles to the campground.

The West Side Reservoir Road is narrow with many switchbacks. Not suitable for larger RV’s. Please use caution.

TALLY LAKE CAMPGROUND

Overview

Tally Lake Campground is located on the northern shores of its namesake lake, west of Whitefish, Montana. The campground is popular with locals and tourists visiting the Flathead National Forest and offers a variety of recreation facilities and activities for the whole family.

Recreation

Hiking, horseback riding and biking trails wind around the Tally Lake Campground and the lake. Wildlife like waterfowl, bald eagles and migratory birds are commonly spotted. (No horses are allowed in the campground)

A dock provides access to the lake’s best fishing, which includes kokanee salmon, a variety of trout and northern pike.
Visitors also enjoy boating, water skiing and other water recreation on the 1,326 acres of Tally Lake.
This campground also offers Kayak, Paddleboard and Canoe rentals.

Facilities

The campground offers 39 campsites for tent and RV camping, 17 being first come, first serve. It provides access to a boat ramp, an open air pavilion with private volleyball net, beaches and picnic areas and public volleyball net.

Campsites are equipped with tables and campfire rings with grills. Accessible vault toilets and drinking water are provided. As well as a dump station with a water fill station. Water spigots throughout the campground are not for filling your RV, only your jugs of drinking water. An on-site host is available to answer questions and provide additional information.

Natural Features

The campground is nestled in the highlands of northwestern Montana, adjacent to Tally Lake, which is the deepest natural lake in Montana. It sits in a mature forest of Western Larch and Douglas fir trees.

Nearby Attractions

The popular Whitefish Lake is about 20 miles from the campground. Visitors to the area also enjoy the Forest Service Summit Nature Center at Whitefish Mountain Resort, located about 25 miles away and accessed by the resort chairlift or the Danny On hiking trail.

OWL CREEK CABIN

Overview

Owl Creek Cabin is a rustic, single-room dwelling that can accommodate up to four guests. Horse campers enjoy the Owl Creek experience because a corral is available for use just 200 feet from the cabin. The corral may be reserved independently from the cabin by Clicking HERE Same day reservations may be made by contacting the Swan Lake Ranger Station during business hours at 406-837-7500.

The cabin can be accessed by vehicle. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Recreation

Visitors to the area enjoy hiking and horseback riding on a variety of trails, some of which lead into the Bob Marshall Wilderness Area. The cabin in also about a half-mile from Holland Lake, which offers swimming, boating and fishing opportunities. In winter, cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are popular in the area.

Facilities

Owl Creek Cabin is a single-story structure with a covered front porch and an accessible entrance ramp. The 16-by-20 structure contains two bunk beds (4 total beds) with mattresses, a propane fireplace, electric lights, an electric cook stove with a small oven, as well as dining utensils and a reasonable assortment of cooking pots and pans.

The cabin is not equipped with running water, but from mid-May to mid-November, a potable water source is located just outside the front door. During the winter season, water is not available and guests will need to bring their own. An outhouse is available outside the cabin.

Guests will also need to bring their own bedding, food, flashlights and a first aid kit, among other necessities. Click here for more cabin details. Guests must clean the cabin and carry out all trash before leaving.

Natural Features

The cabin is located in Swan Valley, just south of Holland Lake, at an elevation of 4,200 feet. The building backs up to a stand of mixed conifers, including lodgepole pine and Douglas fir trees.

Owl Creek Cabin is located at the Owl Creek Packer Camp, about 4 miles off Montana State Highway 83 in the Swan Valley. From Highway 83 turn east onto Holland Lake Road #44 near mile marker 35. After 2.5 miles, turn right on Owl Loop Road #9558. Go about 0.5 miles and turn right on Road #10121 to Owl Creek Packer Camp. The camp entrance is located on the right. Turn here and continue straight through the camp, turn left at the end and drive past the corrals. The cabin is located near the end of this loop on the right, just past the last corral. There is no sign marking the cabin, but the rental is the only structure in the camp area.

MISSION LOOKOUT

Overview

Mission Lookout towers above the forest canopy, providing guests with unrivaled 360-degree views of the beautiful Swan Range, Mission Mountains and Swan Lake. The site served for 75 years as a fire detection tower, and the current lookout has been around since its construction in 1959.

The tower can be accessed by vehicle. A parking area is adjacent to the facility. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Recreation

Along with the spectacular scenery, the immediate area offers visitors an unlimited array of outdoor activities ranging from fishing and swimming at the nearby Swan Lake, to watching migratory waterfowl at the wildlife viewing area.

Hunting is also popular not far from the lookout. Shooting within 150 yards of the Lookout or from/across roads is prohibited.

A variety of hiking and mountain biking trails can be found in the area.

Facilities

The 15-by-15 facility sits atop a 40-foot tower. It is equipped with a built-in double bed and two folding cots, to accommodate up to four adults. The lookout also has a propane cooking stove, simple cooking utensils and a table with four chairs. A modern vault toilet, picnic area and fire ring are located at the base of the tower.

No water or electricity is available. At an elevation of approximately 3,700 feet, the cabin affords views of Flathead National Forest, including the Mission Mountains and Swan Lake.

From Swan Lake, travel south on Highway 83 for 3 miles. Turn west onto Porcupine Creek Road 10229 (mile-marker 68). After passing Forest Road 9714, turn right onto Forest Road 9803 (2.2 miles after leaving the state highway). Continue on Forest Road 9803 for 1.4 miles, to a gate. The gate may be opened. If not, it can be opened with the same combination code as the tower. The tower and parking area are located just beyond the gate.

STAR MEADOWS GUARD STATION

Overview

This two-room historic Forest Service Guard Station is located 23 miles from Whitefish, Montana, and is accessed by a paved road. Star Meadows was built to serve as a work station and a place to pasture stock. The buildings on this site were built in 1941 and were in service as a work center until 1971. In June 2001, a Passport In Time project completed the restoration of the cabin and the site was put on the National Historic Registry. The tool shed was renovated to create an additional bunkhouse in 2010 with American Recovery and Reinvestment funds. With two bunk beds, it sleeps four comfortably and is great for kids.

Recreation

There is plenty of opportunity for hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking in the area surrounding the cabin. Trail #171A starts in the back yard and goes all the way to Sylvia Lake approximately 10 miles away. In the winter, visitors enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Snowmobiling can be enjoyed on designated trails, but is not permitted on the cabin grounds.

Big game hunting in the national forest lands is a popular activity enjoyed by visitors, as well as fishing in Sheppard Creek behind the cabin, other nearby mountain streams and Tally Lake, which is about 11 miles east of the cabin. Guests at the cabin also enjoy ample open space for yard games and other outdoor group activities.

Facilities

The two-room cabin comfortably sleeps up to six people and the bunkhouse sleeps four. It is furnished with four single beds and a futon couch that sleeps two. There are electric heaters throughout the cabin and in the bunkhouse. The kitchen comes complete with refrigerator, oven, microwave and coffeemaker; dishes, utensils and pots and pans are provided. Cleaning supplies are provided and the cabin must be cleaned upon departure. All garbage must be packed out.

The restroom is a wood paneled vault toilet 20 yards from the cabin and has electric lights. A well with a hand pump is also located 30 yards from the cabin and water is available approximately April 1st through November 30th. There is no running water. A patio provides an outdoor area with tables, chairs and a charcoal grill. Please bring your own charcoal and empty it in the receptacle provided. An outdoor fire pit, picnic tables and horse shoe pit are in the large backyard.

Dogs are allowed. No pets are allowed on the furniture and cleaning up after them is required. Pets may not be left in the cabin while renters are away; an outdoor kennel is provided.

The site is also an excellent area for large family gatherings, with ample room in the lower meadow for several RVs or tents. Stock animals are allowed, but there is no corral or running water on site. Renters with stock or additional camp units should contact the district prior to their stay for access to the lower meadow.

Guests must bring their own bedding and food, among other necessities. Guests will also need to bring water if the reservation falls outside of the range of dates when water is available nearby. There is no cell phone service at the cabin. During winter storms or snowfall accumulation, the paved access road may not be plowed, so be prepared for winter driving and road emergencies. This is a non-smoking facility. Please be respectful to adjacent neighbors.

Natural Features

The cabin sits in a valley near the foot of Mt. Swaney, providing views of the surrounding forested mountains. It is in the northwestern corner of Flathead National Forest in the Tally Lake Ranger District nearest to the Kootenai National Forest.

SCHNAUS CABIN

Overview

Schnaus Cabin is located near the Wild and Scenic North Fork of the Flathead River, in the Flathead National Forest. It can host up to 12 guests for a scenic, peaceful mountain vacation. The rustic dwelling provides a superb setting for fishing, hiking, bird watching and much more in the Whitefish Mountains.

The fully accessible cabin can be reached via vehicle and a parking area is located outside the cabin. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Recreation

Summertime activities include hiking, rafting and fishing. In winter, visitors enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing. Bird and wildlife watching are also pleasing pastimes, and guests may see elk, moose or bears in the area.

The cabin is equipped with a propane cook stove, heater, lights, a wood stove and accessible vault toilet. Furnishings include two double beds and a bunk bed on the main floor, plus twin beds located in the loft.

The cabin sits near a creek and some ponds, a short hike from the North Fork Flathead River. It is surrounded by scattered pine trees and lies within a meadow at an approximate elevation of 3,700 feet, in the Whitefish Range of the Rocky Mountains.

The Glacier View Ranger District is bordered on the east by the North Fork of the Flathead River and Glacier National Park. To the north is Canada and west is the Kootenai National Forest.

BEN ROVER CABIN

Overview

Ben Rover Cabin is located 35 miles north of Columbia Falls, perched near the Wild and Scenic Flathead River. The rustic accommodations provide a delightful setting for photographing scenery, viewing wildlife and enjoying the peaceful sounds of nature. The cabin also provides access to a variety of activities, including hiking, fishing and boating the river.

The cabin is generally accessible by vehicle, however, in winter, four-wheel drive vehicles with chains are strongly recommended. Guests are responsible for their own travel arrangements and safety, and must bring several of their own amenities.

Recreation

Visitors to the cabin can enjoy fishing, canoeing and kayaking on the river. Floating from Polebridge to Glacier Rim is easy, as the section contains mostly Class I to II rapids.

Cross country skiing, snowshoeing and snowmobiling are popular activities enjoyed by winter visitors. Various designated snowmobile routes and flat areas are available nearby. Trails are available to hiking in good weather.

Facilities

A campfire pit with benches and a vault toilet are located outside, and the water source is a well with a hand pump. Indoor accommodations fit eight guests on two double beds, one bunk and two twin beds.

Amenities include a propane cook stove, propane lights, a heater and a wood stove. The kitchen offers basic cooking pots, pans and eating utensils. Cleaning supplies are also provided. Guests will need to clean the cabin and carry out all trash before leaving.

No electricity is available and guests are advised to bring food, bedding, a cooler, garbage bags, flashlights and all other basic camping gear. Water is not available December through March, so guests should bring plenty for drinking, cooking and cleaning. (Click here for more cabin details.)

The cabin is set along the North Fork of the Flathead River near the western border of Glacier National Park. Aspen trees dot the property as it backs up to a stand of conifers. The front of the cabin opens up to a grassy field, offering views of the peaks of the Livingston Range in Glacier National Park.

Glacier National Park is a short drive away and the Polebridge Mercantile, offering limited supplies, is just a half-mile up the road.

Directions

Ben Rover Cabin is located 35 miles north of Columbia Falls, on North Fork Road (County Road 486). From Columbia Falls, travel north on Nucleus Avenue. Turn east at the stop sign, on Railroad Street. The road becomes the North Fork Road as it travels over the railroad overpass. At mile 35 on the North Fork Road, turn east one mile following signs to the town of Polebridge. Turn left (north) to Ben Rover Cabin which is a half-mile from Polebridge on the right. If you cross into Glacier National Park, you have gone too far.

North Fork Road is gravel, intermittently plowed during the winter. A four-wheel-drive vehicle with chains is recommended in winter.
